Major incident management and super-fast communication for shopping centres.
Simple, secure and robust major-incident management
Shop Alert is widely recognised as a generic term within the UK shopping centre sector and remains the major incident-management system of choice for over 50 centres nationwide, equipping them with the ability to communicate instantly with retail units. It is a simple, speedy, secure and powerful system.
Huge challenges continue to face owners and managers of crowded places in coordinating their resources in the event of major incidents such as a bomb or firearms-related terrorist attacks, as have been experienced all too often in recent years.

Email communication between centre staff and retailers can prove difficult to implement and administer. Many major retailers operate intranets and or adopt a policy of allowing only inter-company communication via email. Often centres are forced to use private email addresses in an attempt to deliver global email communication.
As smaller retailers come and go and staff turnaround can be an issue and with those that don’t then keeping email lists current and secure is still a major challenge. Sending emails to redundant addresses or worse to individuals no longer employed within the centre can have serious consequences.
Many centres have failed to square this circle and are forced to deliver site-wide communication on paper and by hand. This is obviously a poor use of staffing resources and is not only inefficient but environmentally unfriendly added to which gives no audit trail whatsoever.
The In-Centre Email app provides instant email communication from centre staff to retail units via the 20-20 touchscreen keypads and the new Alert 2020 mobile app. Giving read receipts and the ability to reply via email directly from a tenant keypad or the mobile app.
The app can deliver rich-media content including forms and can finally make hand-delivered communication a thing of the past.Enquire Now
The nature of modern major-incident management places a great deal of emphasis on the necessity for efficient communication.
Shop Alert’s Bomb Warning App enables detailed evacuation instructions, specific to the nature and location of the risk, to be sent instantly to retailers’ till positions within pre-set zones e.g. malls, specific shops, groups of shops or, if necessary, globally.
In response to a bomb threat, the app provides a fully interactive search and clear facility enabling security management to quickly initiate and co-ordinate a search of the centre which greatly reduces the potential for false evacuations.Enquire Now
In certain circumstances, e.g. a terrorist attack, the correct course of action could be to invacuate, i.e. instruct retail staff to stay in their shops within designated safe areas, rather than evacuate.
Whatever the individual incident requires Shop Alert can deliver fast, bespoke communication whilst giving security personnel a visual representation of the evacuation as it happens. The app allows security personnel to use their resources in a targeted approach delivering optimum efficiency. Automated audit trails provide owners and management with evidence of best-practice compliance.Enquire Now
The app is designed to give a visual indication of occupancy within retail units across the centre. It can be operated in three modes: live occupancy data, scheduled occupancy monitoring, monitoring of void units.
Live occupancy mode gives an instant visual indication of whether retail units are occupied or not. Centres describe this facility as a major boon during evacuation drills. It stops the practice of only partial evacuation of staff giving centres audit trails of units that didn’t fully evacuate.
Scheduled occupancy monitoring allows you to monitor retail units during times when no units should be occupied. Ensure all contractual and health and safety requirements are met. The app gives an audible alarm and visual indication should any unit have occupancy outside agreed contractual times.
Monitoring of empty or temporary void units is a facility designed to handle some of the issues learned from the Nairobi shopping mall incident. In the Kenyan mall, terrorists had built an arsenal of weapons stored in empty units over weeks preceding the attack. The app gives an instant alarm should a unit designated as empty be entered at any time.Enquire Now
The very latest security protocols may require your centre to go into ‘Lockdown’.
Due to recent tragic events, security preparations and protocols are adapting. Should a multi-location terrorist attack occur then certain premises (such as shopping centres) may be pre-warned and required to put the centre in immediate ‘Lockdown’.
Shop Alert’s latest development the ‘Lockdown App’ is designed to quickly and simply facilitate that requirement. Developed rapidly, on request from existing high-profile clients, the app was quickly deployed in sites across London and has since been adopted in centres across the UK as the new security advice has been adopted in shopping centres and entertainment venues nationwide.
Significant installation and ongoing maintenance-cost savings can be achieved with the introduction of the Security Management App in place of a conventional centre intruder-alarm or building management system.
The app shows the exact location of activations on the Shop Alert floor plan and gives a full log and incident report facility. These are just some examples of the potential uses for this highly flexible and cost effective option:
• Fire doors
• Movement detectors
• Disabled refuge buttons
• Disabled toilet help buttons
• Remote personal attack buttons
• Plant failure e.g. lifts, escalators
• Retailer’s alarm systems
You can suspend monitoring of an individual fire door, between 8.15 AM and 5.30 PM every day except Sunday or a group of movement detectors for 3 hours; the app offers complete operational flexibility as standard.
The Security Management App operates through conventional Shop Alert cabling. Where available an existing IP network can be utilised significantly reducing the requirement for cable installation.Enquire Now
Firearms & Weapons Attack
Following the tragic events at the Nairobi shopping mall in Kenya there is a heightened awareness of the possibility of a firearms terrorist-attack in a UK shopping centre. CONTEST sets out the Government’s strategy for countering terrorism. An important element of the strategy is to create safer places and buildings that are less vulnerable to terrorist attack and, should an attack take place, where people are better protected from its impact.
NaCTSO (The National Counter Terrorism Security Office) has produced specific advice for shopping centres. In light of this advice and that of the BCSC (Firearms attacks in shopping centres) the Shop Alert – Firearms and Weapons Attack App was developed.
As well as instant bespoke communication the app can provide automated heatmaps of activity and non-activity via occupancy sensors within a retail unit. It can provide the security services with accurate occupancy data and give instant communication-facilities with retail units.Enquire Now
Using small key-fob devices for security officers and cleaners to replace cumbersome hand held wands, the intelligent real time guard tour module enables centre management to view the last reported locations of staff on the Shop Alert floor plan.
The date, time, identity of the security officer/cleaner and location is automatically logged and in the event of an incident, i.e. a spillage, the security controller can enter a full detailed report for future reference.
Fully programmable tours allow management to allocate routes to individual staff, and through the comprehensive exception reporting facility, identify any tours that have not been completed.
Access control functionality for individual doors, incorporated into the guard tour module offers a highly cost-effective alternative to conventional access control systems.
The clock in/out facility enables management to record the start and finish of security officers’ and cleaners’ shifts and produce individual attendance reports. This facility can be extended to offer the ability to register contractors on site.
The Guard Tour Module operates through conventional Shop Alert cabling, fibre optic or Cat5e. Where available an existing IP network can be utilised, significantly reducing the requirement for cable installation.Enquire Now
Thankfully major incidents are very rare but security, health and safety, and operational incidents are daily occurrences for most centres. Conventional centre security-communications often utilise radio. However, this is not discreet, has issues with total coverage, gives no visual representation and provides no audit trails. The Alert 2020 Messaging App handles all these flaws. Fast, robust messaging, instant verification and autogenerated audit trails for evidence of best compliance.Enquire Now
Within seconds we can notify about lost children, upcoming events, recycling targets, inspections, audits, information and the odd fun interaction, to name but a few. Retailers bought into the scheme very quickly, as it is much more direct than a retail radio system.
